Where I sould not use FQDN?

I use vpopmail-5.4.0.
I have the problem, that I can send emails to my local vpopmail-account
with smtp, but not to outside the qmail-server.

And the second very crazy thing is, that I cannot find AUTH LOGIN with
telnet:
telnet 127.0.0.1 25
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to 127.0.0.10.
Escape character is '^]'.
220 mail.example.com ESMTP
ehlo
250-mail.example.com
250-STARTTLS
250-PIPELINING
250 8BITMIME
auth login
502 unimplemented (#5.5.1)
auth plain
502 unimplemented (#5.5.1)

I use these patches with qmail 1.03:
patch < netqmail-1.04-tls-20040120.patch
patch < big-todo.103.patch;
patch < qmail-0.0.0.0.patch;
patch < qmail-1.03-dns.patch;
patch < qmail-1.03-pop3d-stat.patch;
patch < qmail-bounce.patch;
patch < qmail-bouncecontrol-1.03.patch;
patch < qmailqueue.patch;
patch < tarpit.patch;
patch < qmail-smtpd-relay-reject.patch;
patch < qmail-1.03.errno.patch;

I and see now faults in:
/var/log/qmail/current
/var/log/qmail/smtpd/current
/var/log/mail

After the new installation vpopmail could not find a /etc/tcp.smtp, so I
created it manually:
# touch /etc/tcp.smtp

Was it wrong what I does?

In some Howtos they talk about a checkpassword-file?
Does I need it for smtp-auth?

Viele Grüße,
Peter.
