Ok, ok!

I am not the only smart ass around and you both already covered all
those possibilities. It is still intriguing why the "new line" sequences
got messed up then.

Well, instantly when suspended, a bit more when hibernating (it has to read
the 256 MB memory back from disk).

Suspended mode seems to match the one Geir describes, since some systems
are still on. (But CPU, disks and fans are obviously off.)

When hibernating it is completely off. I can just unplug it and take it
elsewhere - which is what I do to carry the PC from home to the office (it
is a very small PC and fits in my rucksack). When I switch it on it boots
and loads all the OS with all apps running in the state they were.

I think portables just get suspended since they always have a power source
(battery) and energy consumption, although not null is minimal.

The reason I hibernate my PC instead of shutting it down is that waking up
from hibernation is SO MUCH FASTER than booting the damn thing.

And still, BE OS boots in some 15 seconds on a Pentium 433!

How fast does OSX boot?

Have fun,
Paulo
