Sounds reasonable. But I really don't like the proposed notation (5 = Integer 5. = Double and so on) since it is quite strange for "normal" template designer and it does not solve all the problems we'd have with number support. Would it make sence to declare the release 1.5 (or perhaps 2.0?) as "The next version of velocity"? This would give us the chance to fix and refactor some things. So the whitespace-handling could be more predictable (differences between ## and #* *# and stuff) and we can introduce escaping (full support not only quotes), filters, map-support, decimal-support and so on. The 1.something-branch will live on for hot bugfixes and security issues. A bit more work on the support-side (no question!), but this would give us the opportunity to make velocity "nearly perfect".
