Is this in an issue somewhere? If not please make it so.
Can you set
the milestone to 1.4? Geir, was this approved for inclusion? What
further revision does it need?

Not for 1.4, as it has the chance of breaking lots of stuff. There's a good suggestion on how to avoid it, but there's no reason to do in 1.4 - I see 1.4 as the catchup release to get the stuff that's been done since 1.3 out, and new stuff - Number changes, Map support - as new...

Yes?

Sounds reasonable. But I really don't like the proposed notation (5 = Integer
5. = Double and so on) since it is quite strange for "normal" template designer
and it does not solve all the problems we'd have with number support.

Well, the good thing about this is that for 1.3.1, 1.3.2 and 1.4 we don't have to solve the above.

And it's nice to see you notice the problem that this will pose for designers. I too fear distinguishing between 5, 5., and 5.0. We have a little hairball here, I think.

Would it make sence to declare the release 1.5 (or perhaps 2.0?) as "The next
version of velocity"? This would give us the chance to fix and refactor some
things. So the whitespace-handling could be more predictable (differences between
## and #* *# and stuff) and we can introduce escaping (full support not only
quotes), filters, map-support, decimal-support and so on. The 1.something-branch
will live on for hot bugfixes and security issues. A bit more work on the
support-side (no question!), but this would give us the opportunity to make
velocity "nearly perfect".

It is nearly perfect :)

Map support isn't a major change, so I think that should go in quickly. I don't remember the filters suggestion at the moment. Decimal is a hairball. Escaping could be too...
