I'm -0 to pushing this patch to 2.0. This is 1.5 material because it
enhances what is there and does not break backwards compatibility.

For 2.0 we should stop doctoring the symptoms, take a step back and
think long and hard about where we want to go with logging.

(It seems that configuration and logging will stay the bane of all
component development indefinitely... ;-) )
