Title: Re: BLOOD ADMINISTRATION
This old concept derived from the size of the internal lumen of peripheral catheters. Now technology allows for thin walls meaning larger lumens, so no need to use a garden hose for blood anymore. Lynn

Tamara,

There are several entries in the venous archives that reference the fact that 22g caths are ok to infuse blood products through.  http://www.mail-archive.com/cgi-bin/htsearch?method=and&format=short&config=venous_mailsrv1_ohsu_edu&restrict=&exclude=&words=blood+administration+22g

The old info that we all learned in nursing school about using anything smaller than a 20g will lyse the cells is not true.  A co-worker once pointed out that our cells make it through our capillaries without lysing, so certainly cells can make it through a 22g catheter.  I thought that made a lot of sense.
