You have to ask yourself the following questions if you are recording this arm circumference?

1. What is the evidence-based practice that indicates that this measurement is helpful? 2. Who uses this information, and how does it get transfered with the patient? 3. Are the PICC inserters measuring consistently? (moot point if you are not using it for followup)

So if I am understanding this all, no one is doing even the initial
baseline circumference? We do not do daily measurements, I was only
thinking of the measurement on insertion day. Thanks, Patty

We have stopped measuring arm circumference because we found it was not
consistently measured the same way each time. Also that information has
hardly ever been necessary to determine if a problem exist. It has been
removed from our forms.

Hi all, We are getting started on ultrasound PICCs, and the
question has come up regarding the arm circumference measurement.
Currently with the traditional approach in the AC, we have always
measured 3 inches above the insertion site. Now we're thinking that may
not always be possible if we place the PICC higher up in the upper arm.
Question: is there a standard guideline that everyone is using, and is
the guideline different for traditional and ultrasound? Thanks so much.
