I'm almost speechless. This is just what I was afraid of when I sent this
message
PRIVATELY to Doug. Why would he want to pass it on? This wasn't exactly
the
Nixon tapes. I've been doing this listserv with no compensation for over 12
years.
I'm not really planning on making a fortune at this. I'm retired and like
it that way.
This website is costing me a lot of money and time and I couldn't do it at
all without
some sort of funding. My not-so-hidden agenda is to make enough money with
it to
start other websites to do the same thing for other specialties. If I make
some extra
money, great. If not, I'll be happy to just break even. It never even
occurred to me
to charge the subscribers. It all started when I turned 60 and tried to
think of a way
I could further contribute and this is what I came up with. My prime motive
is to help
nurses.
Over the years, I've seen many many posts. A good many of them are to ask
for
things like policies and procedures, forms, bibliographies, etc. It seemed
to me that
just having them in one place would be helpful to a lot of people. Also,
many of
our subscribers only last a few days because of the volume of mail. The
volume here
is amazing for such a small specialty. A website would allow for those who
want a lot
of input what they want and for those who want to pick and choose what they
want.
I'm sure a lot of you will miss the e-mail at first, but I'm hoping you'll
go through
the learning curve of a different format. There will also be a search
function so that
if you just want to find out about some topic, you can look just for that.
The forum
will still not allow advertising - just the pages on the site itself (you've
seen them-
the banners). Also, I'm going to allow advertisers to send e-mail
announcing new
products IF the subscriber wants them. When you first sign up you will be
given
that option.
I don't even know Doug, but we've had similar problems in the past. I'm not
afraid
of the competition. Venous has twice the subscription that vascular does.
It just seems
unneccessarily repetitive. Also, when the forum starts - cross-posting
ends.
This has put me in a strange position. Since this is out there I felt a
need to respond,
but I don't want this to turn into an on-line war. Nancy, would you please
send this
on to "vascular" and if anyone else has something to say about this message
send it
to "vascular", Doug ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) or send it to me privately
([EMAIL PROTECTED]).
Thanks for your patience and support!
PS. The website is getting there - what was two weeks is now two months,
but I've
put up most of the content and I'm still waiting for the designer to finish
his part.
Also, there will be a calendar so let me know if there are any meetings,
classes or
whatever you want published. It looks like it will be up within two weeks.

Subject: RE: [vascular] paid advertising
Doug,
Did Sarah mean for this correspondence to be public? Did you have her
permission prior to posting?
Sarah did not say anything about charging members, simply that advertisers
would provide some funding in turn for banners ads etc. Sarah has spent
many
hours, dollars and many years creating this first venous list group.
Doug's
vascular group started a few years later. Doug, why did you create the
vascular group when there was already a venous group?
Sarah deserves at least our consideration in viewing the new set up and
determining the benefits. It seems appropriate to consider the joining of
the two groups. Doug, if you get no benefit from the vascular yahoogroup,
why would you not consider a merge? Sarah, you have always had our best
interests in mind and I for one support you 100%. I am excited to see what
you are creating.

Sarah,
Our list really is a non profit and I personally do not profit from
the list. We do not charge sponsorships etc. It is a free service to
nurses. Although our list has been a little less restrictive when it
comes to products and postings about products we do not wish to
dissolve our list at the request of those on the venous list. However
we are fully support of the venous list and find that both have been
extremely helpful to nurses. The fact that Venous is now going to
become a profit center I feel we need a site that does not charge for
advertising. Our list is growing by 15 members a week recently and our
over all membership has members from 30 or more countries. Vascular
wishes Sarah the best as she moves forward in her website based site.
Doug
Doug, you probably know I'm converting the venous list to a website. I
really don't want to compete with you and I'm hoping we can find some
kind of agreement. Would you consider closing your list and refer your
members to the website if I gave you a year's free advertising? I want
this site to be successful so that I can start similar websites for
other specialties. If I remember right you started "vascular" so that
you could advertise. Would you be interested in this?
Thanks!
Sarah
