Hello to all,
We are looking to start using ultrasound for PICC placement for infants and
children. We are looking for information from pediatric picc or iv teams.

What type of pediatric PICC's do you place? Single and dual lumens, common
sizes are 3 & 4r

How many Pediatric PICCs do you place a year? 1700/yr

In what department are Pediatric PICCs placed? (IR, bedside etc).
Majority placed in an IR suite by a PICC RN, critically ill infants & children
@ the bedside

What do you use for pain, lido, emla?
Topical anesthetic (LMX4) used on all pts 37 weeks gestation and larger.
Local anesthetic * buffered lidocaine also standard for all pts

Do you use sedation? What type and on what age groups?
We sedate < 20% of our pts. Common sedation medications include versed,
fentanyl, and ativan. We do our best in trying to coordinate our procedure if
pt is being sedated for another procedure. The most common age for sedation is
toddler to preschooler. We do utilize a child life specialist for procedural
distraction along with parental presence.

Do you use ultrasound? What age groups? Would you be willing to share
policies?Exclusively use ultrasound for all age groups 1000g and bigger.
Clinical benefits have included consistently high success rate, decreased # of
attempts, increased ability to meet infusion needs of pt (larger catheter size
or dual lumen),and basilic vein insertion. Ultrasound has also increased our
customer base * we rarely turn down a pt.

Yes, willing to share our policy. It is currently being updated.
