That's what I tried first, but it doesn't seem to take it. It shows some
data in the preview box but when I try to import it asks me to select at
least one dataset. The combo boxes on the 2d import tab are all empty.
I've run it from the console but I don't see any error output

This would be a 4x4 grid of values. By default the coordinates are
integer values.
New versions also lets you specify the grid points at the edges and
use CSV, e.g.
0.1 0.2 0.3 0.4
0.1 1 2 3 4
0.2 2 3 4 5
...
