Since we have very few "Tail Waters" in the deep South and therefore few trout, I'd say Bluegills would be the most popular inshore fly rod species. I grew up in Alabama and fished the backwaters of Pickwick and Wilson Lakes. My first fishing was with Heddon fly rod that Dad got me for my 8th birthday. With it, I fished for every Alabama species imaginable, but especially the Bluegill. Tied my own flies with my Herter fly tying kit. There's nothing quite like hooking a 3/4 pound Bull Bluegill on a light weight fly rod. In late Spring when the Mayfly hatch comes, Bluegills by the hundreds will lie in wait under the branches of willows waiting for the fall. I witnessed this first hand many times. The most fun I ever had was my Dad and I catching over 100 Bluegills in a little over an hour. That was before C & R, so we took all home and I cleaned them. BTW, the world record 4 pound 12 ounce Bluegill was caught April 9, 1950 in Keytona Lake, just outside of Birmingham, AL. Considering how hard even small Bluegills fight, imagine the battle that monster would put up on a fly rod. If you've never tried Bluegills, you're missing out on some really enjoyable fly rodding.
