Hi Wes, I tied some of them in the past, but I didn't fish them so far, but I find the idea interesting.
As far as I understand there are 2 basic designs. For saltwater long feathers are tied in. I guess Whiting flatwing saddles are breed for this. I got some colors during the Coop swaps, and tied some flies for Splinta's Striper Clave. Bud didn't fished'em. Byard is somhow guilty, because he said that only clousers, chrtreuse clousers will catch. I used clousers, but red and yellow ones also, and did catch. Ok, the flatwings didn't see the salt. And for freshwater shorter feathers are in use. In this case I heard the basic concept is, that the flies will sink slower, the flat wing acts like a parachute.
