Wes,
I'm in no way a salt-fisherman (Interested: yes, have already, planning
to do in the future...). Therefore my comments more based on reading...
When fish attack larger prey, The often catch at the head. Why: Ok, I'm
not a fish (Allan: you want to jump in at tis point <G>), but the
advantage is that the quarry isn't able to see anymore, it's easier to
swallow, if the quarry bites, it cannot bite anymore, if they have barbs
at their fins, they cannot hurt you any more... etc. Therefore a hook at
the head of the fly makes sense. Look at many trolling pattern, they are
often tied as tandems and the stronger hook is at the head of the fly.
>From my point of view these long shank hooks make sense only if I ty
flies in a size where the predator fish will catch it as a whole.
Otherwise you will fool-hock the fish with these long shank hooks.
