Back in the late 1950's when I was a youngster, I used to buy the "Angling Times" weekly newspaper for the princely sum of "sixpence" which was 6 old pence before they buggered everything up and went to the metric system of 100 pence to the pound from 240 pence to the pound! Anyhow, I digress, Arthur Ransome used to write an occasional column for Angling Times which I always found interesting. He spent quite a lot of his time in Russia, but I'm not sure when. It may have been pre WWII.
