Back in the late 1950's when I was a youngster, I used to buy the "Angling
Times" weekly newspaper for the princely sum of "sixpence" which was 6 old
pence before they buggered everything up and went to the metric system of
100 pence to the pound from 240 pence to the pound! Anyhow, I digress,
Arthur Ransome used to write an occasional column for Angling Times which I
always found interesting. He spent quite a lot of his time in Russia, but
I'm not sure when. It may have been pre WWII.

Subject: [VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY

"Fishing simply sent me out of my mind. I could neither think nor talk of
anything else. My mother was so angry with me that she said she wouldn't
let me fish again because I might fall ill from such excitement."

Sergei Aksakov {1791-1859} "Memoir" Translated by Arthur Ransome
