I figured the last one would be a B-12 capsule so that if he's still coming after those first ones, you'd have some extra energy to run like hell ROFL, Chuck

Mike,

Still fishing related- self defense in bear country. In Glacier Park, the bears much prefer the Cajun-style Pepper Spray- They'll spray you down to make you tasty before they munch on ya.

The 700 grain bullet is not recommended in the 4" or shorter unless the range is fairly point blank. I keep a 440 grain (hardcast) as the 1st shot- ear-splitting if I shoot over his head and deadly if I have to shoot it. Most of the grizzlies have been shot with bean-bags, so they associate the noise with pain. The next shot is a 500 jacketed flat point for a 30-yard stopper, the closest range for a mock charge.
Then a 700 grain point blank to field dress him in mid-charge.
The last two are 500 grain soft points- one in the fur and one for me if all else fails. If I were to hunt the .500, I'd opt for the 8" barrel, scope, and just the CLHPs for 200 yard shots.

Oh, BTW. I bought the NEF Handi-rifle in the 500S&W. Mini elephant gun, kicks like the dickens. Got it at cost from a dealer, so it didn't set me back much. http://www.shootingtimes.com/longgun_reviews/ST_hr500sandwmag/

From Ballistic Supply on their Handi-rifle loaded with their 700 grain
hardcast:
"Update news - our 700 gr. Hardcast chronographs at 1600 fps and almost 4000 ft. lbs. of energy." That is a TKO of 80! And that's double my .375H&H! (In Africa, for elephant, the min. TKO is 40, which the .375H&H Mag. is, and the only 30cal. allowed.)

Don is your barrel that short? Seems like that big of load you would want a longer barrel.

   Tom et al,
I should have taken a picture of my technicolor thumb-pad on my palm for posterity after the 1st time I shot it. Now it's just a big solid recoil pad now sitting at the base of my thumb. Now that I have it toughened up, I can fire the big boys off without flinching, but I always wear ear muffs. It still hurts the wrist, elbow, and shoulder to shoot more than a few HP rounds, though. I shot my friends .44 mag and it was like shooting a .32 specia
