Luckily there are only black bears in my neck of the woods. I can get away
with .45 ACP. I had one curious black bear come up on me while fishing a few
years ago. I saw some movement out of the corner of my eye as a large black
bear made his way down a hill. I was unarmed so I grabbed the largest rock I
could find, stood on a boulder and started waving my arms and shouting at
it. Meanwhile my fishing buddy was conveniently taking a leak. So the term
getting caught with your pants takes on a whole new meaning to me now. He
couldn't hear what I was shouting about over the roar of the river and by
the time he pulled his waders up the bear was already gone. The bear stopped
dead in his tracks about 50 yards from me and stood up on his haunches as if
he couldn't hear me either and didn't know I was there. The bear turned
around and ran right back up the way it just came. Then my friend comes
walking over casually and asks if I caught a fish because of all the
shouting. He didn't see a thing. Might as well have been a UFO.
