I have early model Sage fly rods in AFTM #4,#5,#6,#7,#8,and #9. They are all home built from Sage blanks. I built the #6 in about 1984 or 85 from a blank and it is generation 2 graphite technology. Initially, I was disappointed with it until I went up one or two line sizes and would cast a WF 8 with ease but wouldn't load properly with a #6 line. It is one very tough rod and I have landed some large salmon with it. With the exception of the #7, the balance of the rods were all built from blanks which I purchased from Patrick's Fly Shop in Seattle as "blems" (blemished) @ $50.00 each. These were RPL (reserve power lightweight) blanks including one LightLine #4. All were two piece. I still have them all, but Sage rods and blanks have risen in price exponentially and I have moved to multi-piece rods and have a Greys (Hardy) rods which are made in Korea I think, but have stood up well for me. It is now cheaper to buy one of these rods than to buy a Sage blank and with all the imports from Asia, my rod building has come to an almost dead stop. I can't afford to buy a $750.00+ rod, so while I like sage, I make do with less costly but still good alternatives. I still like to use my bamboo rods when I can.
