I have friends who still work at the sewing factory here that uses Gudegrod
thread to make men’s suits and I’ll ask one of them why it’s waxed. My worked
there several yrs ago, but I just asked her and she said there’s was all NON
waxed at that time. Believe it or not, as sticky as wax can be, I think it’s
used as a lubricant. That’s because of an old trick my grand mother and mother
taught me. They’d be darning socks or fixing our torn jeans and they’d have a
bar of soap (or a piece of a used candle) to stick the needle in every few
minutes, and it acted as a lube and the needle slid right through the denim,
but without that soap (which would be like wax) they’d have a MUCH harder time
sewing them. My great grandmother and her friends used to have a huge quilting
frame hung from the limbs of a shade tree, and they did the same thing with
soap and/or candles

      Hi Tony;

      The thread is new old stock from a clothing factory. I think it's waxed
(dang if I know why?). It came on a 925 yard spool and I spooled some on a
sewing bobbin using my wife's sewing machine. While doing this the thread left
residue on the sewing machine.

      When tying the fly the thread felt as if I'd applied wax to it.

      I do not know of any Gudebrod silk being waxed. When silk was used for
tying none of it was waxed. Waxing thread came at a later time. The YLI is not
waxed, if it were waxed it would not take varnish for rod wrapping, Same with
the Pearsalls.
      This is what I think I know. If I am wrong, I would like to know.

            Hi All;
            Bought some NOS Gudebrod 00 silk in orange from evilbay and tried
it out on one of my favorites a Partridge & orange: interesting I think the
silk is waxed and much darker than Pearsalls or YLI. First photo shows
Pearsalls, Gudebrod, then YLI.
