This is just my opinion only, but I have been wrapping rods since my schooldays
60+ years ago

Silk Thread:

Used primarily for wrapping bamboo rods because of its esthetics, goes clear
when varnished and is traditional. I have 3 cane coarse fishing rods that I
wrapped years ago when living in the uk. I wrapped them with silk thread and
used even finer Pearsalls’s fly tying silk of the same colour for the
intermediate wraps every few inches. The rods were varnished with an oil based
varnish and still look pretty good although not used for many years. Some
people refer to a thread as silk when it is not real silk.

Nylon Thread

There are all sorts of threads out there and although they might be referred to
as nylon, I’m not sure if they are as there are so many polyesters and similar
derivatives. I have a good supply of Gudebrod rod wrapping threads and that is
what I use on all my graphite and fibreglass rods. It is stronger than silk,
comes in a variety of colours, does an acceptable job and not as expensive as
real silk.
