Jack,I wrapped my first rod in about 1947 with Silk thread. I started wrapping
Glass and then Graphite rods with Nylon. Only used Color Preserver on very few
rods as it was a real pain in the butt if you did not get the wraps totally
soaked. If not totally soaked dark spots would show up if using varnish. Flex
Coat is an Epoxy finish that does not give you that problem with Nylon. The
past 17 years I have been making bamboo rods and use only silk on them with a
varnish finish and no CP. I like the translucent look of the wraps. Doing this
will change the original color of the thread. It will make it darker or a
totally different color.I think all color preserver now is water base, in the
old days that was not so. It was mostly Shellac base. I still have some of that
on the original bottles.I don't want to bore anyone here on my method of
finishing wraps but if you want to know what I do, feel free to contact me off
list.Is this bamboo or Graphite you are asking about.Tony

This is just my opinion only, but I have been wrapping rods since my schooldays
60+ years ago
Silk Thread:
Used primarily for wrapping bamboo rods because of its esthetics, goes clear
when varnished and is traditional. I have 3 cane coarse fishing rods that I
wrapped years ago when living in the uk. I wrapped them with silk thread and
used even finer Pearsalls’s fly tying silk of the same colour for the
intermediate wraps every few inches. The rods were varnished with an oil based
varnish and still look pretty good although not used for many years. Some
people refer to a thread as silk when it is not real silk.
Nylon Thread
There are all sorts of threads out there and although they might be referred to
as nylon, I’m not sure if they are as there are so many polyesters and similar
derivatives. I have a good supply of Gudebrod rod wrapping threads and that is
what I use on all my graphite and fibreglass rods. It is stronger than silk,
comes in a variety of colours, does an acceptable job and not as expensive as
real silk.

1. Could someone expound on the pluses and minuses of using Silk or Nylon
thread for wrapping guides on fly rods?
2. What type and size of silk thread do you feel looks nice?
3. I don't like the look of the No Color Preserver Nylon threads or really
using color preserver at all. Am I just being eccentric or are there others in
this camp too?
