Actually Jimmy, your first impression is the correct one. Tiny holes 
sometimes won't leak until you're chest deep in the river and the 
water pressure is sufficient to get through. You can try and try to 
find the leak on dry land to no avail. But the alcohol trick will 
find the tiniest leak. An added benefit is the preparation of the 
area for patching.
