John -

On my 5wt, I have traditionally used a loop in the end of the fly line
which I make by doubling the tip of the line back and securing with two
nail knots using 6 lb mono. I add a drop or two of CA glue to the
knots. Then I put a short piece of electrical heat shrink tubing over the
knots and heat it to make a smoothe finish.

On my 9wt, I have a short piece (6" or so) of heavy butt material nail
knotted to the end of the fly line and a perfection loop in the standing
end. To that I use a handshake loop with another perfection loop on my leader.

Now for the kicker. For the past year or so, I have been using one of the
little plastic "line connectors" on my 5 wt. It is a small "football
shaped" thing with a hole in each end. You feed the fly line through the
end with the larger hole and out an open in the middle. Tie a double knot
in the end of your fly line and clip off the excess. Then pull the line
back inside the device. You do the same thing with your leader in the
other end of the connector. It is a slick little deal and I have not had
any indication of anything slipping. I have broken 8 lb mono by simply
pulling on it until it broke, but the knot which holds the line inside the
connector has not failed.

I don't think I would trust it on my 9wt though.

Hope this helps.
