I have used some in streamer flies and as a replacement for floss in soft hackle flies.

I bought the silk at a collectable/antique store where there were a dozen partial spools for $5.00.

Some of the silk has good strength whereas others are quite weak.  Perhaps it has more to do with how it was stored than its original quality.
