Hi Brian, first I let the child decide when to start. I found with mine they were interested in what Dad was doing and eventually asked if they could try it too. When that occurred I helped them tye a woolly worm pattern to learn the basics. I found if I tried to control what they tyed they lost interest quickly, but if they are allowed to use ANY material in the kit to do their own thing they tyed more flies. Large streamer hooks give the creative juices somewhere to go. I have some very large wild creations that I cherish as treasure.
