The fish are very shallow after ice out. Often in 2 feet or less. When targeting pike & musky. I use an 8wt straight 20 pound mono with a 12" of wire at the end. My flys are generally over size bass bugs. The streamers I tie on saltwater hooks. I try to imamates perch and shad. The main forage. For the bass I just mess around 3wt and up. Streamers bass bugs the usually junk. I also use hex nymphs this lake is full them. The reason why, I crazy & to add a challenge. Using conventional tackle it is not unusual to land a 100 or more smallmouths per day per person. What is funny is that I get this fishing in a Metro - Park, fishing from shore & wading.
