Two years ago I bought Denny's first book and attended one of his seminars
where we watched him tie his flies one night, listened to his theories one
presentation the next morning, and went fishing that afternoon at our local
lake. Before that a four pound trout was a monster. Sense then I've caught
fish to eight pounds fishing the same water.Of his flies, the seal bugger,
Stillwater nymph, and midge are my favorite. I've accidentally caught
several nice bass while fishing his midge. I think the position of the lead
wire, the long thin tail, and the sparse hackle technique that Denny uses
are all important when tying Stillwater flies but above that, Presentation,
the use of the Cortland 444 clear camo line, the use of a loop knot to tie
on your fly, and matching the tippet size to fly may be the real secret to
his success.I catch as many fish on other flies as his , but regularly out
fish people fishing with me that are using the same fly, fishing the same
water but don't have the clear line or the loop knot. The loop knot seems to
really give a fly life in the water when retrieved, even an unweighted
one.Does anybody else on the list use this knot or have any thoughts on
this? I would be interested to hear them.
