maybe those lead wraps should be given greater consideration, what do you think
Greetings Steve!
I wasn't at the show, but have watched Denny's videos, not just a few times... and he recommends that the most important consideration is where on the hook shank you put the lead. He recommends 20 wraps of #2 lead wire right behind the eye of the hook. This theory leaves it open for the "beadhead movement..." doesn't it? :-) Then there are those that would say that you shouldn't never touch a hook with weight, because it supposedly interferes with the action of the fly, and that if you want weight it should go on the tippet just ahead of the fly. I think this depends on what type of fly you're using, and whether you're fishing in running or still water. In still water, it sure looked like putting the weight on the hook shank where Denny did, gave the fly a nice action in the water! I can tell you that I've noticed over the years that leech patterns that have the lead wire in the same position, front of the shank, seem to work better. Also he "subtle" use of flash, be it krystal flash or flashabou also adds to overall effectiveness. The emphasis here is on "subtle..." Sparse is better. I think the thing I learned the most from Denny, is making the tails on the sparse side, instead of what I have been doing.
Happy Tying!
