Simply put, I buy whatever and wherever I can afford. If I need hooks that Byard has I buy em', If Wally world has the foam I need, I buy it. If the local garage sale has fur, I'll buy it. I'm indeed on a budget and I've found useful materials in my yard, car seats, old coats, fly shops, online, 2nd hand stores, Hunting friends, and yes Wally world. There are NO rules to this hobby. If I can spend $2 or $0.33 for the same foam, It's either go for a good buy or just donate to your local fly shop. If I go back and that foam isn't at the fly shop anymore, no harm done because I wouldn't have bought it anyway. But I might drop $2 in a cup, or maybe toward a decent cape.

I buy a good bit of stuff at fly shops, as I usually get higher quality try getting decent tinsel at hobby shops, and the ones near me only carry heavier gauge wire than I need. And the feathers are atrocious in comparison to the quality that I can get in some shops. But, the dark secret that I know about is the price of fur and feathers that we buy from shops.
