Actually I believe the knock on barbless hooks is that they penetrate deeper than the barbed variety. This has little effect on larger fish but may cause a problem where many small trout may be hooked. Unfortunately, it is the smaller trout which are generally harder to release without damage when caught on barbed hooks. All in all I would weigh in on the side of barbless.
