i never keep flies long enough to worry abuot varnishing
shank, too many trees.  Except brass bead heads I place a
drop of superglue behind bead and build up thread on this
then put a second drop superglue onto threads to hold bead
at eye of hook, sometimes the non-glued beads would move
down the shank
