Dave-
I live in Madras, about an hour north of Bend at the
junction of Hwys 97 & 26. You'd take 97 north from
Bend. September should be fine for steelies, a little
early maybe for the fall/winter run, but who knows.
Depends on weather, temp, luck, etc. You can fish the
middle Deschutes about 20-30 minutes out of Madras
along Hwy 26, Mecca Flats or Trout Creek. If you want
to drive another hour or so north on Hwy 97 you can
fish the lower Deschutes around Maupin.
Drop me a line when it gets closer to Sept, if you
want, and I can probably give you a little more
specific info. Don't forget to bring your trout rod,
too. The redsides are great to fish for if the
steelies aren't hitting.
