Been there, done that... So nowadays i have all my gear in a "Cargo Duffle Bag". this Bag has two side pockets- one has the reels in their cases, the other has the various fly boxes. the Central large chamber has the two vests, tapered leaders, gravel guards, tippet spools, flashlight, spare tools & what not.. has worked fantastic for me so i don't forget anything...so far. It also great to have all the various fly boxes as I can customize my stream selection on the spot, simply by grabbing needed flies from various boxes as the situations call for it.... an in-expensive & very wise investment on my behalf I must say.... As it's pretty hard to forget a bag of such size, you'll notice it isn't behind the driver's seat in my truck in a Heart beat... Give it a try & I'm sure you will see the advantages of such a bag...

Don't feel bad, I've done it myself. Also left the rods once. One time I brought the rods, but forgot to put the reels on them first.
