Could you put the whole thing in a big lockable suitcase or duffel bag ?
That way you could just pull it out and go.

Same here, Dean...
Always forgetting something, but my problem is that I do two distinctly
different kinds of fishing- either trout or bluewater. They are so totally
different I need to have two bags somewhat like yours. The trout bag has
what I need for Wyoming fishing, and the 'bluewater bag' has what I need for
offshore. This 2nd bag is more critical, because if you don't bring it, you
don't got it, and you probably won't be able to get it. I keep a long list
of the things that normally go in it for saltwater trips, including a
photocopy of my passport.
I am concerned this year as I probably won't be able to carry it on the
plane (the tools would be 'weapons'), and there's no way (as yet) to lock
it. It would also be very easy to steal from. Does anyone have any ideas?
It's a Clear Creek boat bag with the drop down zippered pouches on all sides
and the zippered center section for storage. It does have a storage cover,
but It wouldn't stop a thief. Sould I just unpack it all into a lockable
suitcase and take it as an extra? (Then re-pack it when I get to the motel?)
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Been there, done that... So nowadays i have all my gear in a "Cargo
Duffle Bag". this Bag has two side pockets- one has the reels in their
cases, the other has the various fly boxes. the Central large chamber has
the two vests, tapered leaders, gravel guards, tippet spools, flashlight,
spare tools & what not.. has worked fantastic for me so i don't forget
anything...so far. It also great to have all the various fly boxes as I can
customize my stream selection on the spot, simply by grabbing needed flies
from various boxes as the situations call for it.... an in-expensive & very
wise investment on my behalf I must say.... As it's pretty hard to forget a
bag of such size, you'll notice it isn't behind the driver's seat in my
truck in a Heart beat... Give it a try & I'm sure you will see the
advantages of such a bag...

Don't feel bad, I've done it myself. Also left the rods once. One time I
brought the rods, but forgot to put the reels on them first.
