Stephen, with no distance problems I use John's solution. My
quarter-lens glasses come in a case with a clip that fits easily into a
shirt pocket. My problem occurs in low-light conditions; I used to use a
pen light but recently switched to a Petzl Tikka headlamp (no company
affiliation). Lightweight and rugged, it fits easily into a vest or
shirt pocket and makes tying on small flies at dusk a breeze.
Cheers,
Paul
