Jimmy, well I don't have the rod yet but I will take all things you have said into consideration thanks for the info one other quick question, My dad gave me his old bamboo rod and it is in mint condition all except this one ferrul he said he shut it in a door and it is ever so slightly bent not much though just enough to make it impossible to put the male ferrul in should I wrap a towel around it and have a go at it with a pair of plyers? this rod has lots of sentimental value to it and I realy would like to keep it all origanal.  Thank you Zach ----- Original Message ----- From: Jimmy D. Zach, look for the obvious things like split cane.  I'm not talking about the bamboo strips coming apart at glue joints where the bamboo is joined.    If the cane has been bent severely, you'll see a splintery appearance of the cane.  Is the cane completely broken in half?  It can be repaired by "scarfing", but that's not a job for a "first time" bamboo rod restorer.   Do the rod pieces have a severe "set" to them?, i.e. are they "bowed" , crooked, etc. This can be remedied, but takes time and "know how".  Is the reel seat useable?  If not, you can put a new one on the rod for around $20  If the cork is ruined, it will have to be pulled off and re-corked.  What condition are the ferrules in? Cracks, deep dents?   The guides can be easily replaced, but broken/cracked ferrules are another story.   If you can find one that is in reasonable condition, it'll be fun to restore it.   If in poor condition, it'll tax your patience and pocketbook.
