I take a different approach.
Most of the flies that I tie, are tied without hackle.
I tie foam flies and no hackle flies for my dries. I also fish a lot of emergers.
I do this for several reasons.
1. Money is tight. (I have returned to college after being in the work force for 22 years.)
2. I like to believe that fly tying and fly fishing is something that kids can do in an affordable manner. As I enjoy working with kids and fishing, I have been working on simple, effective, low budget fishing for a while. (See my web page for how low budget I go!)

3. I find that I enjoy my catch more when I do catch it on extremely low budget flies and tackle. There was a recent discussion on the list concerning how we all make personal choices about how we fish and how we enjoy our own style of fishing. Welcome to my world!
