With small flies it is terribly difficult to get a decent strength tippet through the eye to begin with, more less two (hooks in the #18-#24 range).  Maybe Bob is using a long tag from the knot for the dropper?  Occasionally I have little intention of having trout rise to the dry, but figure my odds of hooking one if it does are better with a horse-of-a-dry than a yarn indicator.  In that case I opt for a heavy tippet and tie the dropper to the eye.

Aside knots and placement, I try to use a lighter tippet for the dropper than the indicator (dry).  Say 5x to the dry, then 6x from dry to dropper.  It has saved me on countless occasion from breaking off two flies (as I add new tree species to my "caught" list) and having to re-rig the entire setup.  My wife on the other hand is perfectly adept at lodging both flies firmly in the branch just out of reach over the 20" fish  ; )

Cheers,

Brian

I generally tie the dropper to the eye if the hook if possible. I find that
this casts better for me than tying in at the bend. I use a clinch knot.
