For flies with delicate hackle or other features which
render this option useless, what is the accepted practice? Thanks for your
suggestions!

I print tags up in sheets of 500 on the comp. Then I cut them out and impale them with the fly. If the fly has a micro barb, I place a small piece of tape on the tag first then impale through the tape.
