You're probably right that some dogs are more temperamentally well-disposed to being out on the water with you. For a very amusing description of one, check out Gary LaFontaine's wonderful book "Fly Fishing the Mountain Lakes". He has devoted two chapters to Chester, the "World's Smartest Fishing Dog". In fact, the cover photo shows Chester riding on Gary's float tube, hopefully not menacing the fish.
