My dog really loved fishing and was highly interested in the fish when they were
being landed. He would dance around in the water, generally getting in the way,
which was easy for him since even as a medium-sized Newfoundland, he went about 160
pounds.

His favorite thing was to give the fish a lick and then sniff it till it was
released. Once when I had some difficulty unhooking a nice cutthroat, I ordered him
to SIT-DOWN, which he did immediately, snapping my first home-made graphite rod
underneath. %*&^$%^$!!! While he got a big hug for obedience, I learned to pay
more attention.

A few years ago one of the fishing mags had a cover photo of a guy and his dog.
Many letter-writers complained about it, and I guess that they had a point if the
dogs out of control. However, heading into the mountains without my dog would have
been inconceivable. With a leash on the trail and good behaviour on the water, dogs
should be welcome.
