It depends on what you want to do with your flies. Yes, a fly to display should be tied to perfection, i.e. DonO's masterpieces sell for $250 + when framed. However, I've caught a bunch of fish on "bad" flies. These are the ones I tie hurriedly on the bank, using my streamside kit. Another way to put it: "It don't matter how bad a fly looks if it catches fish."
