Yes, some of the Genetic Hackle necks cost alot, but you don't have to buy the Gold series, you'll do just fine with the Bronze series...which have hackle as good as the Grade 1s from say 10 years ago..

Dean,
I agree with all of your observations, except this one, and that depends on whether you're talking necks or saddles, actually.  In necks, a bronze cape of today is of at least the quality of a #1 of 10 years ago, many being far better.

In saddles, there is no comparison to the saddles of 10 years ago- period.

    DON,
My referance was to the Necks available today.....I learned from another tyer sometime back that the saddles are the same and, as you stated, their grade is based on fly count per saddle.
Also, my comment on trimming hackles relates to trimming the Entire hackle. If the pattern calls for trimming a "V" on the bottom of the fly, example: Dorato Hares Ear, then by all means do it. It's the thing about trimming the entire hackle from a size #12 down to a size #16 that i don't advise.....
I understand that some tyers have a tight budget, I do as well. However i fully believe that saving the money to buy at least a Grade Bronze neck or half neck is well worth the effort.....the quality, generic hackles are the best you can get, they assist in easier tying for the tyer and the fly looks & balances soo much better.
My main objection is Short-changing one's ability to tye the best they can by Trimming hackles & other materials to fit a certian sized fly...
