Rick
I dont trim dry fly hackles, except for odd patterns
that require the hackle to be trimmed flat underneath.
Metz and others provide such a wide range of top quality
feathers today, from birds bred specifically for feathers,
there is no need to trim hackles, just select the
appropriate hackle.
When i started tying flies 30 years ago trimming was
commom place and i didnt do it then either as trimmed
flies look unnatural to me.
Treated with one of the modern floatants/waterproofers
water absorbtion is of less importance

How old is this quote ??
