Is the feather Byard described called the philoplume? I've heard it
described this way although my spelling may be suspect. This is the smaller
softer feather that is often behind and at the base of the hackle you pluck
out. It has its uses . Maybe someone with more experience can list them. I
have only used it for a mobile hackle on a cased caddis type of fly.
