For general cold fly fishing, here are some pointers from Bentley's Outfitters (a local MN fly shop):
- clean your rod before going with Armor All.
- apply a coat of Stanley's Ice Off over the first four guides.
- have disposable pocket warmers along. Thing 'survival' first and dress smart.
- use a shorter rod (8ft) so you can reach the guides to free the ice.
- do NOT swish the guides in the river to remove the ice - it just makes more. Keep your reel out of the water or it will freeze up.

In New Hampshire the trout season opens up Jan 1st for rivers.
Does anyone have any techniques for winter fly-fishing and patterns I should try...
Chris
