JAKE,

Sorry to mislead you...I use Fast action 7,8 & 9wt. rods... They load better for my needs & you can cut out alot of un-nessesary False casting.. That blows out my casting arm in short order, especially when i'm casting 200 gr. plus shooting heads with integrated running lines... On the Steelhead & salmon rivers i use the 8wts. I'm averaging 60 foot casts, often to 70 feet. A Fast action/Tip Flex is a more "user friendly" stick in such cases. Also fast action rods allow better & more accurate mending for me.. their stiffness helps keep line off the water without having to left the rod tip too high.

When I'm casting  Bass bugs & Poppers..i just slow down my casting stroke...waiting until i feel the Bug or Popper roll out behind me, before i begin the slow forward cast... I remember reading books where the writer advises a slower action stick for Bass Bugs & Poppers...I just slow down my casting stroke to accomodate the big ,wind resistant patterns..

In the ocean the faster action rods allows you to make a fast, direct cast when you spot fish working thru an area... one back cast, followed by a "single haul" cast forward is usually all it takes to hammer the fly to the area of the fish. And when your targetting fast moving fish like Barracuda & Bonito...you need to put the fly on them about as fast as you see them... otherwise, their "Outta Here"!!!!

Nothing wrong with slower action rods... if that's what works for you, then I support it all the way. it's been my experiance that faster action rods will work harder for me with less effort & energy...a great thing when Steelheading & you know you have to do "X" amount of casts to hook that one "Y" Steelhead..

just out of curiosity and to clarify what you're saying dean,

you agree that mid-flex would be better for freshwater?  I tested a tip flex last month and I found it appealing, although I was just out in the parking lot.
