Black Gnat in the Mary Orvis Marbury book is listed as Old (English Version) and new (American Version) another fine fly we "modified" or "Americanized"   :0)  So Iain's post is probably the best reference so far.

Does anyone have the Mary Orvis Mayberry book?  I recollect seeing the
Black Gnat, both wet and dry versions, in there.  And I'm sure that Jimmy
can find the Black Gnat in his collection of Herter's catalogs.

Ask DonO, I am sure he not only wrote the book but I bet he also invented that fly.
