Actually he would have to be alot older 103 . Let's figure out the math:
A.) book published in 1900
B.) all patterns featured had to have been in use for years prior to the book being put together..
C.) No baby shortly after birth crawls up to the ol flytying Vise & starts wrapping thread & slingin' feathers... usually that will start at 6 to 7 years of age..
D.) Mary Orvis's book lists a number of different Black Gnats...how long does it take for the parent pattern to mutant in the variations?????
OK with those clues in hand I'd figure the following to be the scenario:
The Original Black Gnat is at least 45 years older then the first Publication of Mary Orvis's book. my reasoning with this amount of years; the Origianl Black Gnat most likely came about in England...Research has pointed to this fact. The Pattern is designed by it originator...he fishes it & finds its effective- in fact he finds it VERY effective in a wider area of fishing situations then he had first hoped for. He begins to hand out copies to his friends & relatives who fish, they find the same thing out that He knows...The Black Gnat is very Effective...
Well that probally takes about 5 years to get this far in the story...remember these folks didn't have the Internet, Television, airmail, telephones, etc... Word of Mouth & Streamside meetings are the norm... To continue: the Black Gnat is being picked up by some tackle dealers in the locations the Originator & his fellow Angles Fish often, the tackle Dealer realizes the value of the Black Gnat & starts tying it & touting it to the many Customers visting the dealer... The Black Gnat begins to vist further Rivers & Streams in the United Kingdom...
Now the word is Out in the fishing world of the United Kingdom...The Black Gnat kicks some severe Trout Booty... it's about 10 to 12 years since the originator first tyed the Parent/Prototype of the Black Gnat, but the Fly has become a Standard in a Great majority of Anglers in the British Isles.....
