I do this for my tandem saltwater fly.   It is a good 8-9 inches long
though.    I very carefully slide the hook into the mylar (or flexitube) and
slide the mylar up around the bend of the hook.   When I get it far enough
in I gently slide the point of the hook through the mylar being carefull not
to cut any of it with the point.  then you can tie it off at the front or
middle of the hook and cut off the excess.   You may want to try melting the
ends of the mylar before you try this so it won't unravel too much for you.
