Okay, I like this one, since I'm always trying to find ways to organize my tying stuff. Of course, it immediately tries to disorganize itself, entropy, I believe is the fancy word for this, I prefer it to terms like messy or cluttered. Please see Rene's messy desk fotos for my desk at maximum entropy.

For organizing thread and spooled materials, I took a piece of pegboard and inserted lengths of doweling in it. You can buy the doweling already cut for use as pegs at a hardware store. I put one at each back corner to hold it up at an angle and spaced the rest in the holes using woodworking glue to hold them. You can make it any size you want. You can also make it to hang on a wall.

For tools, I went to the hardware store and bought pipe couplers in white PVC in the plumbing section. They stand about 1/1/2 to 2 inches high or so. You can also get reducers which have a slight neck to them. I got caps that fit inside the end of the couplers then glued them side by side with regular household cement. I have a 4X4 array (16 couplers)  that takes up a square about 5" on a side. It holds all my scissors, several bobbins already threaded, bodkin, whip finisher, etc. I can make it larger by just adding more couplers to it anytime I want.

All the rest of the stuff just gets crammed in drawers.
